I remember going into it back in 2000 knowing absolutely nothing and being instantly hooked in, it’s honestly perfect. It’s a shame the rest of the movie doesn’t live up to the opening 20, but in fairness it’s difficult to see how it could. Then of course it all crescendos with the terrifyingly well executed premonition scene and the core group being ejected from the plane. It’s that uncanny sense that something isn’t quite right, yet you can’t place what it is and everyone around you is completely oblivious and just having a blast. The music, the pacing, Devon Sawyer’s performance, it all just builds and builds and notches up the anxiety right up until takeoff. Noticing the word ‘terminal’ flash on the flight board, that overwhelming feeling as you see the huge aircraft pull up outside the window of the departure lounge, the dread when he sees the fuselage doors close behind them, sealing everyone inside.
Say what you want about the rest of the movie and indeed the series as a whole but the first 20 minutes, right up until the plane explodes, is executed flawlessly and its the hill I’ll happily die on.Īs someone with a debilitating fear of flying myself, I can’t begin to express how real the details are in Alex’s behaviour at the airport.
